File actions no longer work with External SD card

Hello. First, I admit that I bought and use MacroDroid for just a few simple, but very useful to me-- operations.

And one has always been a simple macro that Moves images/movies from my Samsung Note 8's internal DCIM folder to an identically named folder on my external XD drive. This allows me to take lots of pics and videos without worrying about running out of room on the phone. The trigger for all of this is the launching of the Gallery app.

And all this has worked well, for years. But just recently I noticed it had stopped working. When I went into edit/test the Macro Move File action, I reset the 'To' and 'From' directories for the move command just to be sure things were properly designated. Then when I invoke the action I can see that no files are moved to the External SD.

I tried a simple test macro just to move some test files from Internal to a new folder in the External. Nothing.

I'm not getting any messages about access or anything. What's going on? Has external sd file actions been removed?

Thanks for any help.

Are you using the shell script action? You can use the mv command. You'll need to install the MacroDroid helper and grant permissions. Google has ruined the access for apps, this maybe why you are experiencing this.

Are there any errors in the system log?

Sucks that we need to use shell scripts to do basic file operations. Which shell commands work with the helper app and are there examples and guides on how to use them for beginners?
I too can't access certain protected directories (android/data) and neither does it even ask for permission for those folders like other apps do.

Maybe the information in this thread will help, writing to the SDcard is Permission denied in the shell script, but was possible by using ADB Shell [Tasker Plugin].
