Wouldn't it be possible to create a boolean Magic text (named Cancel, for instance) to retrieve any Cancel value when a Cancel button is pressed anywhere it exists (User prompts, Dialog boxes...)?
It would be much easier to test this Magic text return value rather than a blank value for a string variable or a specific numeric value (such as 2^63) for a preset integer variable (in menus for instance)...
