I don't use root, just ADB wich gives many more options, the above issues should be possible
But UI don't work with screen off

...needs MD as voice Assistant for airplane on & off to work.
thank you!! I re-enabled the Google app on my One+6 so I could use it in Android Auto but I can do without it there but I really miss the airplane mode switch functionality in MD though. thank you again!

I have MD set as voice assist app.
I also use Android Auto and the voice input works fine.
Check your settings - see attached screenshot - make sure voice input is set to Google.

With Tasker, it is possible to switch to Airplane mode without having to change Device assistance app.
As expected, Android 7.0 is too old to verify the operation.

Occasionally MacroDroid's Airplane Mode action (which I rely on all the time -- every time I get home MacroDroid turns it on, to force my phone to use wifi calling) stops working, for reasons I don't understand. But I can get it to work again by changing the Default Digital Assistant to off (or another application), backing out of that settings screen (just to be sure the change got recorded), waiting a minute, then going back and resetting it to MacroDroid.

I see that you rebooted your phone without getting the action to work, and rebooting should have done something similar to turning the assistant off and on, so this suggestion probably won't work, but ... you might try switching the assistant off and on once or twice to see if you can get the Airplane Mode action to work.

(FYI: The "airplane_mode_toggleable_radios" setting is as you suspected -- it controls the radios that can be manually turned back on even after airplane mode is activated)

(FYI #2: The Airplane Mode action does work fine even when the screen is off)

Yep, I know and spent a good amount of time trying to figure out how it does it without any success so far. I'd love to implement this but every time I burn many hours it's a big hit on all the other stuff I have to do. I do intend to look at this again at some point.

The value lives in a system setting and it's certainly possible for MacroDroid to change this setting. If I then reboot the device, the airplane mode will turn on/off based on this setting but it won't auto update when applying this setting. In the old days it used to be possible to send a system broadcast that would then cause the setting to take effect but this is now blocked. I guess Tasker has figured out an alternative to make the setting refresh. If anyone has any insight how this might be working then I'd love to know!
